Family trip to Mahe Island with children. Ideas on where to go with your child

Active and inquisitive children who are always ready for another adventure should definitely like Mahe Island. There are not many entertainments for kids even in the capital city Victoria. A couple of football fields where all kids gather together, about a dozen slides and swings – the only things you can find in the city. Then, there are animation teams, playrooms and playgrounds for babies in any large hotel, so be ready that your children would like to equally participate in every adventure with you.

However, you can go to the local cinema and watch something there in English. Even though the ticket office has its own rather peculiar working schedule, all the world premieres are on the same day here as the world ones. In the day time, they show various cartoons and family comedies.

You can also take your children to the waterfall beside the track which right near the temple in Port Glaud. A walk through the rain forest might not be the longest but definitely fascinating, especially for kids, as well as swimming in clear water falling down from a several-tens-meters-height. If your child doesn’t mind walking on foot, you can simply discover the island together. There is a decent number of places with pure nature where unusual trees grow and diverse animals live (the ones typical for Seychelles, e.g. flying foxes). In addition, there are several routes: from a half-hour to a half-a-day or even longer. In case if your children can ride a bicycle, you rent it in Victoria and go on a cycling trip. You can also get to any point on the island by bus though.

If your child loves animals, it’s worth going to the adjacent islands. For instance, there is a «hotel» for flying foxes on Praslin where you can feed them from your own hand or even touch. Then, you can get close to land turtles on La Digue. But remember that it’s forbidden to try to get to their enclosures. However, nobody would actually pretty care about it unless you heart the animals. So, we would strictly advise no to put your kids on turtles just for a fancy picture. Nevertheless, children would surely remember a trip to one of the neighbouring islands as a true journey.

Moreover, you don’t even have to rent a boat in order to get to an uninhabited piece of land. Go to the beach near Port Glaud during undertow as you would be able to get to another extremely little island right on your feet.

Another idea is to take your child to a fascinating excursion around Mahé on a cabin cruiser with a transparent bottom. Kids would have a chance to enjoy marvellous landscapes, see marine life and even swim near a deserted beach. If your kids like something like this, you can also rent a boat and go fishing in an open sea.

Your child is already quite a nice swimmer? Then offer them to try snorkelling. Local waters are perfect for it – water is clear, lots of animals and just a few people on the beach. An atoll near the central beach of Beau Vallon Beach is rightly admitted being one of the most peculiar places for snorkelling. Amateur divers usually swim here. Besides, if your children are already eight years old, they can take scuba diving lessons and learn how to do it on the shallow depths – there is actually something interesting to see! In addition, children can try surfing, sailing yachting and water skies on Mahé too.

Moreover, there are pretty good places for those kids who are keen on history. For example, you can visit the house of a famous French pirate Jean-François Hodoul, the oldest house of planters on the whole island or go to the Natural History Museum. Remains of local plants and plants are mainly exhibited in the museum. However, there is a small exposition dedicated to the history of the island’s colonisation. What is more, you can show kids a Hindu temple or mini-version of English Big Ben (located in Victoria’s city centre). If your kid Is fond of art, you can, for instance, go to the Michael Adams Gallery or visit the Immaculate Conception temple.
