In ancient times the island was called Pityoussa which means «covered with the pine trees». There are still many wonderful pines, but the island is called Spetses which means «fragrant island» in Italian. The Venetians, who came here, admired the smell of thyme, rosemary, fragrant herbs and sweet-smelling flowering shrubs. Nowadays the rich flora still covers the territory of Spetses.
