Farewell to Skiathos Skiathos was conquered by different states during history. A large Persian squadron was set up close to the island during the Greco-Persian wars. It helped Greeks to win on land and the leaders of Skiathos joined the Maritime Union of city-states. Later the island was conquered by the Roman Empire and it became a part of Byzantine. The knight crusaders took the island from Byzantine and gave it to Ghisi brothers. After the peaceful life under the Italian reign, Turks took the island and it became a part of independent Greece only in the 19th century.

The evidence of Ghisi brothers can be found in the capital of the island. The commercial and the Old ports divide Bourtzi Peninsula into two parts. You can visit the peninsula and admire the ruins of an ancient and fortified castle. It was built in the 13th-14th centuries. Despite its size, the fortress couldn't protect people from pirate raids and they moved higher in the mountains. The fortress was destroyed by time and weather. Nowadays there are only ruins of the walls and towers.
The second castle on the island is Kastro. It is well preserved now. The building has a strategically advantageous position. It is located on the top of the rock. In the case of pirate raids, all of the wooden ladders were taken away in order to protect the settlement. In spite of its small size, there were three hundred houses and twenty churches behind the walls of Kastro. The fortress was left in the 18th century when the threat of attacks from the sea disappeared and the inhabitants moved closer to the coast. However, Kastro is very well preserved. There are still houses, churches and even a mosque without a minaret, built during the reign of Turkey. You should definitely visit Kastro and find the Church of the Nativity.
