Sightseeing in Paguera - what to see. Complete travel guide

Some call this city a Little Germany because there are always so many German tourists in Paguera. First urban settlements started appearing here in the beginning of the 20th century. Rich Spaniards built many houses here. They were attracted by wonderful nature and peaceful atmosphere. Originally there was a small settlement on the site of the modern city. The inhabitants of this settlement were mostly occupied in the extraction of resin from numerous pine trees that were growing in this region. Later the settlement was turned into a military fortification, and then it started developing as a tourist center.

Not far from the city center is a beautiful cathedral built the best traditions of the Gothic style and complemented by unique elements of the Mudejar style typical for Spain. At first glance, it is hard to realize that this cathedral was built just a few years ago, as it looks like an original ancient structure. In the daytime the cathedral operates as a museum: for a small fee, everyone can appreciate its unique interior decoration recreating the style of the past. In the evenings, church services are often held in the cathedral.
An outstanding historic landmark of national importance is Bellver Castle located in the immediate vicinity of the resort. It is the only round castle in Spain. The fortress built in the 14th century was inspired by the ancient Jewish Herodium. The historical castle stands on a hill, whose height is 140 meters, so it is perfectly visible from many parts of the island. For many years the fortress has been used for various cultural events, and part of the historic building is occupied by the museum.
In the vicinity of Paguera is the charming village of Cala Fornells, which is sure to surprise fans of hiking and historic sites. To climb the hill where the village is located you need to overcome a steep staircase that begins on the resort's main beach. Guests of the resort are offered very interesting sea excursions, and one of the most popular ones is a trip to the island of Dragorera.
