The unique rock formation Phallic Rock (the islanders call it Ka Ule o Nanahoa) is a wonderful place for hiking. It is located in the territory of the Pālāʻau State Park. There is a legend about the god of fertility Nanahoa who lived here and admired a young Hawaii girl once. His jealous wife Kavahuna became angry and pulled at the girl’s hair. Nanahoa did not like it and hit his wife so bad that she fell from the rock and turned into a stone. Later, the god understood what he had done and morphed into a rock himself. This rock is Ka Ule o Nanahoa. Interestingly, it was believed that the rock gave women the possibility to have a baby. Many islanders came here to pray and this tradition is still observed.
Near the rock, there is an observation platform (Kalaupapa Lookout) that has a fantastic view of the sunlit Hawaii Park.
