Liberec invites fans of active holidays to visit beautiful nature parks and botanical gardens. Besides, the city offers several modern entertainment centers. The favorite spot of tourists with kids is Zoo Liberec - the oldest zoo in the Czech Republic. It is located near the city center and now occupies a vast area of about 13 hectares. Even though it is very close to the city center, there are beautiful centuries-old forests nearby, and a beautiful stream flows through the zoo. Spacious enclosures were built for animals in this natural area. About 1,000 animals belonging to 170 different species inhabit the zoo to date. Some of them are extremely rare so the zoo makes every effort to maintain their population. A special zone in the zoo is reserved for domestic animals. Here, visitors can feed goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and other friendly animals. The wonderful Liberec Botanical Garden is also considered one of the oldest in the country. It has gathered unique collections of plants brought from all over the world. The garden became available to the public in 1895, while in fact, it was formed much earlier. It was severely destroyed during the First and Second World Wars, but each time it was still possible to restore it anew. The last major reconstruction of the garden took place in the second half of the 20th century. Today, several glazed pavilions for rare plants are installed here.
