Kipouria Monastery is the place where visitors can not only walk in a historic area and see the building from the inside, but also admire the beautiful panoramic view. The holy place has a very unusual location – right on the top of a high cliff. If you climb here, you will see the whole island under your feet. Another important religious landmark is located in the town of Markopoulo. This is the Virgin Lagouvardos Church. Every year on August 6 a real miracle takes place here.
Numerous small snakes gather under the bell tower of the church. The heads of these snakes are marked with small black crosses. According to locals, these creatures are no one but holy spirits. The snakes are enclosed in small vessels, and during the day everyone is welcome to bow to them. When the day is over, these snakes are revealed. After this they disappear. The town of Scala is the location of one of the most striking monuments of the region. In 1956 archaeologists discovered an ancient Roman villa with terms here. Moreover, the beautiful mosaic, which once decorated the floor of the mansion, has miraculously survived till our days. Archeologists were even able to distinguish the author of the mosaic - Krater. The town of Masarakata is the location of the Mycenaean tombs. This is a large underground complex of caves. According to scientists, the age of the stone walls, which consist of huge blocks, is approximately 2500 years.
