Venetian fortress, which is located on a high hill, remains the main symbol of the city. It was built during the colonial period on the site of an ancient acropolis. Only a part of the original building, fragments of protective walls, and the gates have survived until now. According to historical records, the statue was installed in the temple in 440 BC. The structure built of the best ivory featured impressive size. The height of the statue was more than 15 meters. About 200 kilograms of gold were used to decorate it. The fate of the beautiful statue is unknown. According to some reports, the grand temple at Olympia was closed during the reign of the Roman Emperor Theodosius, and the statue moved to Constantinople in 363.
