Corfu Island will delight gourmets with an abundance of delicious seafood and meat dishes. Actively used spices and aromatic herbs make the local cuisine truly unique. Also, most dishes are traditionally prepared with premium-quality olive oil. In local restaurants, you can try sumptuous lamb dishes, and the methods of cooking meat are special here. Most meat dishes are grilled, and before cooking, the meat is marinated in olive oil and lemon juice with the addition of fragrant spices. Historically, locals cook most of the meat dishes on charcoal, while some modern restaurants use grills. Fish and seafood are often cooked over an open fire as well, which allows to keep the unique taste of products. Seafood lovers will have a chance to taste mixed plates, which include several types of fish, shrimps, squids, and octopuses. In Corfu restaurants, guests are also offered a rich selection of interesting salads and snacks, an important component of most of which is delicate cream feta cheese. It is also added to traditional Greek salad and common appetizers. Only selected goat milk is used for the production of the popular cheese. Gourmets would probably be interested in trying another special type of cheese that is made on the island - “Kefalotyri” having a rich and savory taste. An important part of local gastronomy is pastries, for the preparation of which a special kind of dough is used - Phyllo. Thin layers of this dough are one to three paper sheets thick.
