Arequipa can offer a variety of unique historic attractions, the majority of which belongs to the colonial period. There are many beautiful buildings in the city, most of which have been transformed into hotels, restaurants, and shops. Of course, there are several interesting museums in the city, and Museo de Santuarios Andinos is one of the most visited cultural establishments in the city. It exhibits an incredibly interesting collection of archaeological artifacts discovered during excavations in the Andes. A frozen mummy of a young girl is the most famous exhibit in the museum. It is internationally famous as “Juanita”. The mummy was discovered high in the mountains in 1995. The discovery of the mummy was a real sensation in the scientific world. The girl, who was no more than 15 years, was buried among the glaciers yet in the mid-15th century. In the opinion of historians, the girl was sacrificed to Incan gods. Today, this is one of the most well-preserved mummies in the world. Museo de Santuarios Andinos features other interesting artifacts, the age of many of which is more than one thousand years. Old monasteries remain an interesting peculiarity of Arequipa. Many of these monasteries are still active. Established in the second half of the 6th century, Monasterio de Santa Catalina is one of the most interesting monasteries in the region.
