Culture of Seriphos Island. Places to visit - old town, temples, theaters, museums and palaces

Locals believe that the legendary Cyclops Polyphemus who was deceived by the treacherous Odysseus lived on Serifos. There is neither confirmation of this point of view, nor, however, its refutation in Homer's work. The islanders are ready to show everyone the cave of the Cyclops, near the settlement of Koutalas, where, in fact, thousands of years ago a legendary monster lived. However, you decide whether to believe in the existence of a Cyclops or not but you should definitely visit the cave and admire its beauty. It is also believed that the Cyclops created Psaropyrgos - an ancient structure which height exceeds nine meters. Local residents believed for centuries that it is impossible to build such a high building.

Many call the building "the Throne of the Cyclops". Today, you can see the magnificent sunsets and sunrises from the walls of the building. Be sure to visit Kastro tis Grias (the old woman's castle) - a fortress located on a hill above the capital of the island. The fortification was built during the reign of the Venetians on Serifos to protect against the raids of pirates and hostile neighbours. Kastro tis Grias stands in its place for nearly five centuries, although it is not used for its intended purpose more than a century and a half. The fortress is quite well preserved for its years. In addition, Kastro tis Grias was built on the site of an ancient Acropolis, which walls and foundation you can see here. You can climb the walls of the fortress and enjoy magnificent views, but be very careful – many stones can fall at any time.
The Monastery of Taxiarches is a beautiful construction built in 1572. It was a place for pilgrims near the settlement called Galani. The monastery is still active, because visitors, especially women, are not allowed to visit the monastery every day and only at certain times. Going to visit the monastery, it is better to know in advance when you can get inside, otherwise, you risk missing one of the most beautiful buildings on the island. There is a wonderful monastery dedicated to the archangels Michael and Gabriel, the patron saints of the island. Many marble sculptures, bas-reliefs, frescoes and faces of saints decorate it both inside and outside. Copyright www.orangesmile.com

You should definitely see Moni Taxiarchon Monastery. It still functions but men can’t enter here. Ascetic beauty with strict lines and a small number of simple decor elements is very consistent with the status of the monastery. The monastery is located in a forest, and you will have to walk most of the way to it. On the way to the monastery, you can go to the Church of Agias Triadas, Holy Trinity, which, despite its modest size, boasts a large number of bright decorations.
Don’t miss the chance to see the ruins of the ancient fortress Aspers Pigors, presumably built in the 4-3 century BC.
