The city of Pythagoreio is considered to be a historical center of the island being its ancient capital. The territory of the city and of its suburbs is still worked and dug by archeologists. Archeological findings indicate that first settlements in this area were established more than five thousand years ago. The main symbol of the island is still the Heraion of Samos being an antique building which has been by part preserved till present days.
