History and Entertainment
The discoverer of the archipelago was Christopher Columbus. His team boarded the island of Saint Vincent in 1498. At the end of the 15th century, the islands were inhabited by the Caribs. They had resisted Spanish colonizers for several years. Only in the middle of the 18th century, the Europeans managed to suppress constant uprisings. In the 17th-18th centuries, France and Great Britain attracted by vast fertile lands fought for the right to control the islands.
As a result of the long-standing struggle, Great Britain obtained control over the archipelago. The European settlers created vast tobacco, coffee, cotton and indigo plantations. Like in other European colonies, after the abolition of slavery in the middle of the 19th century, the islands saw the times of crisis. Only in 1979, the archipelago gained complete independence from Great Britain. It should be noted that the agriculture is still an important component of its economy. On the islands, there are vast banana and coconut plantations. Arrowroot is also grown here: from its roots is starch produced.
