On Patmos you will find numerous old buildings. St. John the Evangelist Monastery was built in 1088; nowadays the walls of the monastery keep the exhibition of a small museum. Here visitors can see ancient manuscripts and a collection of jewelry. The shrine is kept by 40 monks, which will happily tell the story of the monastery to their guests and will show all interesting rooms and cells. Near the monastery is located the cave named after John the Evangelist. According to a legend, in this cave the Apostle received the "Revelation". A church was built in this cave. The church is considered sacred and is included in the list of the world’s unique religious monuments. The monastic library, which exhibits over three thousand books, in another place worth visiting. One-third of all the books are manuscripts, many of which exist in a single copy only. The terrace of the library features a great view of the island and the coast.
An amazing cultural institution is an ethnographic museum called the "House of Simandiris". This private museum is located in the capital of the island, the city of Chora. It has been managed by the Simandiris family for several years. The museum is housed in a very beautiful ancient building where it was possible to preserve the old decoration as much as possible. Among its exhibits are unique ones, whose age is more than 500 years. Visitors to the museum can admire old furniture collections; see unique icons of the 14th-15th centuries, beautiful old utensils and silverware, as well as unique works of art by local masters. The very mansion where the museum is housed was built in 1625 and is of great architectural value.

Here researchers discovered the ruins of an ancient acropolis and many other unique ancient artifacts. Some of them date back to the Bronze Age, many artifacts discovered here are currently stored in the Archaeological Museum.
