In the vicinity of the city, there is another ancient stronghold - Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam. Its construction lasted 13 years and was fully completed in 1747. The impregnable fortress was erected to protect the Dutch colonies. The old fortress played an important role during the Second World War - a large artillery point was equipped here by the American army. After the war, huge cannons were preserved in the fortress, which can be seen here today. One of the most visited cultural facilities in the city is the Surinaams Museum, the extensive collection of which is currently presented in three separate branches. The largest one is located in Fort Zeelandia. It contains valuable historical artifacts dedicated to the country's colonial past. The museum also boasts a rich collection of archaeological and ethnographic exhibits. Several times a month, it hosts thematic events dedicated to national culture. The Mosque Keizerstraat is one of the most beautiful historical monuments not only in the city but also in the country. The very first mosque on its site was built in the first half of the 20th century. it was quite a modest wooden structure. Later it was decided to rebuild the mosque. Its large-scale reconstruction was completed in 1984. Now the magnificent mosque is famous for its sophisticated exterior and rich interior decoration.
