First settlements on the territory of the modern Nerja appeared yet in the prehistoric times. The best proof for this is the rock paintings, which have been discovered in caves. The first drawings were discovered by accident - local boys reported about them. It happened in 1959. Since that time Nerja has been visited by thousands of tourists from all over the world, who come to look at the cave paintings. The majority of the excursion routes are also associated with these wonder caves, some of which have been converted into archaeological museums and carefully keep collections of valuable artifacts.

An interesting historic structure is the Acueducto del Águila, also commonly known as the Eagle Bridge. The exact date of its construction is unknown, the beautiful bridge lies over a deep gorge and has about 40 arches. Several hundred years ago, all Nerja coast was built up with watchtowers, but almost all of them were completely destroyed. Today we can see only two surviving towers, the highest and most famous is Torre de Macaca rising to an altitude of 12 meters. Despite the fact that the tower has no special architectural value, the locals still care about its safety.
