Magdeburg is an ancient city and the capital of the Saxony-Anhalt federal district. This place is situated on the bank of the river Elbe. During the times of Emperor Otto I the Benedictine monastery was built in the city, but because of this monastery the city was ambushed all the time by enemies who wanted to establish their authority. Their attempts finally brought success in spring 1631, when the imperial commander Tilly had ordered his troops to storm the city and destroy Magdeburg. Terrible destructions came upon the city during World War I. The historical center of Magdeburg laid totally in ruins. Later it was reconstructed, but only partially. However, those sights, which are precious to the city and its history, stand by now.

The tallest wooden building in Germany, called the Millennium Tower (Jahrtausendturm) is in Magdeburg. It is located in the Elbauenpark. The height of this original building is 60 meters. The tower is completely built of wood and its construction was completed in 1999. The tower was built for the opening of the next exhibition of landscape design, which took place in the park. After the exhibition, it was decided not to disassemble the construction. Now it is used for various exhibitions and cultural events, and on the top of the visitors' tower an excellent viewing platform was built.

The Brandenburg Gate is considered the main sight of Berlin, the capital of the country. The building of the Gate took place in 1788 – 1791. Nowadays, the monument is an important historic object.
