Limoges is often called the cradle of fire arts; such an unusual name is due to the fact that in the Middle Ages the most original and unique types of crafts have flourished in the city. One of them is production of pitted enamel. In the 15th century, local enamellers have made dishes and decorations of incredible beauty. Traders from different countries came here in search of outlandish product that hadn’t been found in any other city in the world. Masters decorated with enamel their candlesticks, boxes, dishes and even book bindings. Portraits and paintings with biblical motifs that literally valued its weight in gold were works of art. The process of enamel production was called a fire craft, because it requires the use of high temperatures. Enamel production has flourished until the 18th century, and then gave way to other unique craft, making porcelain. The emergence of crafts was associated with a deposit of special white clay that has been found in the immediate vicinity of Limoges in the second half of the 18th century. Later, craftsmen began to make beautiful clay crockery. Limoges porcelain differs with range of unique qualities. All items are completely free of any defects, and porcelain has an extremely beautiful shade. As a consequence, another interesting national craft has emerged. It was painting on porcelain. As for festivals taking place in Limoges, it is worth highlighting several ones deserving the attention of every tourist. The most famous event, for which many theatergoers visit the city, is held in late September - early October. Of course, this is the Festival des Francophonies praising French language and culture. Spectacular theater and dance shows, music concerts, and exhibitions are available to the audience. And all this happens in a warm friendly atmosphere, which makes it impossible not to enjoy the offered events. The festival takes place in various cultural institutions of the city so it's recommended to follow the news and posters at this time.

For travelers with little tourists, it would be interesting to visit Limoges at the end of May, when such a colorful festival as the Marché de Pâques takes place in Jardin d'Orsay along with Easter. Colorful parades of people dressed in children's favorite heroes are organized for kids, interesting competitions are held in the markets. Before Easter, young travelers are always delighted with another holiday - namely, Kaolin et Barbotine, during which kids can learn many interesting things at Centers Culturels Municipaux. Besides workshops, children can enjoy contests, exhibitions, stories, conferences, and seminars. Many of the events organized are free of charge.

Another event widely celebrated in Limoges and throughout the world is Halloween. The route of the parade participants dressed as vampires, witches, and ghosts passes through the central streets of the city. Restaurants and cafes offer themed menus and parties are organized in bars and clubs. Might seem like the holiday is no different from Halloween in other cities, however, in Limoges, it is celebrated on a very large scale (thus, about thirty thousand people visit the French city during the festival every year). Before Halloween, in mid-October, the city hosts two gastronomic festivals - Toques et Porcelaine and Frairie des Petits Ventres. Each one deserves a visit and allows to get acquainted with the rich gastronomic culture of the city and the region.

The end of June is traditionally marked by Urbaka Street Culture Festival. The event lasts for 4 days, during which one can see art exhibitions on the central streets of the city and admire some magnificent theater performances. Before the summer solstice on June 22-24 (Jour de St. John), colorful events are organized on the waterfront and in parks along the Vienne River (from Quai Saint-Martial to Pont Saint-Étienne). These include sports competitions, contests, art exhibitions, theatrical shows. Spectacular fireworks become a culmination of the festival. It is also worth noting that on Fridays in July and August local clubs and bars invite musicians playing live music in different genres - from rock and blues to folk and French chanson.
