However, the town had another name at that time – Sveti Stefan. When the king died, the fortress got a new owner, Duke Sandalj Hranic. He made this area an important center of salt trading. When the duke died and his nephew Stjepan Vukčić became the ruler in the region, Herceg Novi finally became a town. Stjepan Vukčić also gave a name to the new town – Herceg Novi. In the 80s of the 15th century, the Ottomans captured the town and remained its owners for as long as two centuries. Two centuries later, the Venetians managed to defeat the Ottomans and add the fertile land of Herceg Novi to the territory of the Venetian Republic.
