Freeport is the second-largest city in the Bahamas. This is a vibrant settlement with many busy people that is equally active during the daytime and at night. Despite a big population, Freeport is an ideal destination for active recreation. In Freeport and its surroundings, there are many quality golf courses and tennis courses with modern infrastructure. Even fishermen can enjoy their favorite activity here because there are special fishing centers in the area. It is easy to explain why Freeport has such a well-developed infrastructure – the city was initially planned as a resort. In the 18th century, pirates were often leaving their ships in this area. Witty merchants were arriving at the coast and trading there in attempts to buy slaves or stolen pirate treasures cheap. When the time of the sea rogues ended and all pirates disappeared, the region faced a period of decline. In 1955, the woodworking industry emerged in the region when Wallace Groves, a Virginian entrepreneur, was granted a plot of land in the region. To develop the area, local authorities gave Wallace two hundred square kilometers of land. These were mostly swamps and scrublands.
