The most important and famous historical symbol of Assisi is the Basilica di San Francesco d'Assisi. Its construction started in the first half of the 13th century and was completed in 1253. The shrine contains the tomb of the patron saint and his closest companions. Therefore, thousands of pilgrims from all over the world visit this sacred place every year. The medieval church is of great architectural value and is also famous for its rich decoration.
