Agropoli is a small town with a population of around 25 thousand of people. During summer days the number of people increases in three times and two third of the population form tourists. Mild climate and spacious beaches have attracted visitors from European countries for years. In summer this small town turns into a center of entertainment, where life stops neither on daytime, nor at night.
Whole coastal zone is occupied by beaches. Nearby are located restaurants, trading centers and entertainment complexes. The city also has several historic sights, which are definitely worth visiting when entertainment turns to be a bit boring. Among the religious buildings are the Church of St. Peter and Paul built in the 6th century and the Church of St. Mary of Constantinople created in the beginning of the 16th century. Many sights in this town were created at the times of the Byzantine Empire – a medieval fortress, numerous burial places and protective facilities.
agropoli The main religious attraction of the city is the magnificent Church of St. Mary Draperis; it is not formidable, yet attractive due to it’s beautiful decor. This church has preserved antique murals, as well as practically all of the original decorations. It is located on one of the hills near the coastline, and there are a few natural observation decks located on site. Mary is considered to be the patroness of the city, and so every year on the 24th of July there is a festive and incredibly interesting celebration held in her honour.
One of the city’s oldest buildings is considered to be the St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church. Its construction was finished in 593AD, and this church is valued for it’s unique architecture and the spirit of antiquity. In honour of these saints, there is an interesting annual celebration held in the city on 29th June. The festival is accompanied with street performances, gastronomic events, and various master-classes, which familiarise visitors with the native culture.
The primary historical site of the city is considered to be the Aragonese Castle, which was built in 15th Century; to study all of it’s features will take more than a day. It is located on top of the hill; to reach the fort one must first overcome a long path of stairs. A vast number of curious surprises awaits the travellers, as not only may they take a free stroll around the surroundings, but also evaluate the collection of various art objects inside. Often there are interesting cultural events held on site, for example, one can come for a rock concert, or indeed for a classical music event. The picturesque historic location is ideal for walking strolls, and there are numerous fine observation decks from which the tourists love to take pictures of the coast and watch the sunset.

Amongst the city’s museums Palazzo Civico delle Arti stands out the most. In this magnificent Arts Palace is located rich and diverse exhibit collection. Almost all of the ground floor of this is taken by the Historical museum. Various archaeological artefacts, that were found during the research of the city’s territory are also presented in this museum.
