Culture of Agistri Island. Places to visit - old town, temples, theaters, museums and palaces

Agistri is a small island, which size is only 14 square kilometres. Scientists suppose that it was inhabited more than 2500 years ago. Unfortunately, there is almost no evidence of ancient life on the island. A lot of monuments were destroyed, due to the rich history of Agistri. The island was an arena of wars between different countries. Pirates also contributed their mite in the destruction of local monuments. They attacked the island several times.

Not only Greeks but also Arabs and Byzantines left their mark on Agistri. A good example of it is the Church of Agia Kyriaki, which can be found in Limenaria, a small settlement of Agistri. The church is small, but it has served for the village for many years. The early Christian Basilica was initially situated in this place. Unfortunately, it was destroyed. Panagia Chrysopolitissa Church was built on its foundation in the 6th century.

Megalochori or Milos, the capital of Agistri, is rich with various attractions. Many tourists are attracted by a large windmill, which can be found in the central part of the settlement. There is a rich collection of all kinds of household items, clothing and weapons used on the island in different periods of its history. The museum collection will allow you to understand how people lived, what they ate, what tools they used and what their ancestors did in their free time. You can find the Church of St. Nicholas near Aponisos. It was built under the strong influence of the Byzantine style, that’s why it doesn’t look like a typical religious building on Agistri.
