Zakynthos is the well-known resort island that is a part of Ionian Islands. Lots of legends are associated with the island. Monastery of Anafonitrias is the landmark of earlier ages. It was founded back in 15th century, when the island was under control of Venice. The monastery was severely damaged during earthquake in 1953 and only its old chapel survived intact. According one of the legends, it was the place of sanctuary dedicated to Artemis. The church and monastery of Holy Mother Skoliotis was later built on top of the ancient holy place. There are interesting markets and shops in every town of the island. They are great for purchasing interesting souvenirs and locally produced goods. For example, Zakynthos Island is famous for its delicious honey and olive oil. Mandolato nougat remains a popular local dessert and a typical souvenir that tourists like to purchase. The delicious nougat is cooked from almonds. Local farmers produce dozens of types of cheese, many of which are not available in other regions of Greece.
