Saint Dionysius was born in one of local fishing villages and became respected with locals while alive. The church itself was built in early 18th century; it houses relics of St.Dionysius. Monastery of Anafonitrias is the landmark of earlier ages. It was founded back in 15th century, when the island was under control of Venice. This holy site is also dedicated to the holy patron of the island. It’s the place, where Saint Dionysius became a monk and later an abbot. The monastery was severely damaged during earthquake in 1953 and only its old chapel survived intact. Today there's the small museum at the monastery housing a collection of Dionysius personal belongings.
