Velika Gorica offers a range of interesting activities for tourists of all ages and with different interests. Everyone keen on history and interested in historical landmarks should definitely visit Andautonia Archaeological Park. This fabulous landmark is located just a short drive from the city, in the village of Scitarjevo. The park is open on the site of archaeological excavations of Roman Andautonia. During the antique times it was the biggest city of the region and an important city on the Sisak to Ptuj road (also known as Siscia-Poetovio). The city was an ancient center of culture as Andautonia is mentioned in ancient manuscripts that date back to the 1st to 3rd centuries. At that time, it was an economic, cultural, and religious center of the Zagreb region. Archaeological excavations in this area started in 1981 and haven’t ended till our days. Many remains of the ancient city were carefully restored and the archaeological park appeared on the site of the excavations in 1994. Nowadays, visitors of this fabulous place can explore several sections of the ancient Roman city that are located in an area of 2500 square meters.
