Culture of Toledo. Places to visit - old town, temples, theaters, museums and palaces

Toledo Islamic Center One of the main landmarks of Toledo is the fascinating Alcazar fortress, which has been built in the mid15th century and has witnessed a huge number of battles. During its long history, the fortress was restored and rebuilt several times; during the siege of 1936 it was destroyed completely. Contemporaries managed to restore the historic building. Today the fortress looks exactly the same as during the reign of Charles V. Tourists are invited to stroll through spacious corridors and halls of the castle, as well as to look at dungeons that have managed to survive to the present day. They have served as the main sanctuary for townspeople since medieval times.

An interesting tour sight is Hospital de San Juan Bautista. The building is interesting, first of all, from an architectural point of view, because it is the true embodiment of the Spanish Renaissance. Construction of the hospital began in 1541 and lasted for more than sixty years. Nowadays the part of the historic building hosts the famous Museo Duque de Lerma. Its collection is very extensive and striking in its luxury; among exhibits there are priceless works of art, weapons and ornaments, as well as an authentic 16th-century pharmacy.
It’s also worth to visit Castillo de San Servando. Many exciting stories and legends are associated with this 14th-century fortress. The last reconstruction of the castle took place in the middle of the last century. Now it is a regular venue for important business events. The most important religious landmark of the city is the Cathedral of Saint Mary striking with its skillful decoration. Copyright www.orangesmile.com

According to historical documents the cathedral was laid in 1226; its construction lasted more than three hundred years.

Among the cultural venues the Santa Cruz Museum (Museo del Santa Cruz) is particularly popular. Its collection is very diverse and includes works of art, archaeological finds and a large collection of works by local artisans.
