According to one theory, first settlements in the territory of the modern city appeared more than 6,000 years ago. During the antique period, the prosperous city of Evmolpiada was located there. For many years, it belonged to Thrace, and in the first century B.C.E. it became a part of the Roman Empire. The city had an important strategic location, and that fact made it incredibly attractive for numerous conquerors. In the 6th century, Slavic tribes controlled that region. In the end of the 9th century, the city was added to the First Bulgarian kingdom.

Finally, in the 14th century, the city was conquered by the Ottomans. Taking into consideration such a great number of military actions in the territory of modern Plovdiv, it’s a true miracle that so many old buildings have survived till our days.
