One more must-visit religious monument is the Monastery Fotodoti located near the village of Filoti. This is another attraction reminiscent of the era of Byzantine rule on the island. Initially, the monastery was quite modest, but throughout the Byzantine period, towers and fortifications were added to it, which ultimately led to the building's transformation into a fortification. The exact history of its construction is still unknown so one can only guess about it (once again, just ask locals about everything you'd like to know). Later, in 1227, after the Venetians came to power, the building was used as a Benedictine monastery.
