Mausolée du Président Habib Bourguiba is a very important national symbol for local people. The mausoleum was erected in honour of the first president of Tunisia. The mausoleum is of great architectural value. It was built using the best practices of Arab and Muslim architecture. Besides the vault of the president and his family members, the mausoleum also houses a small museum. Monastir can boast not only historic but also natural landmarks. Unique salt lakes are situated in the vicinity of the city. They are the largest lakes of this kind in the world—the total area is 7,000 square metres. Throughout most of the year, the lakes don’t contain water, as it completely evaporates in a hot climate. In the process of evaporation, incredibly beautiful crystal residue forms on the bottom of the salt lakes. Curious tourists come here every day to admire them. The lakes look just incredible against a background of surrounding sandy landscapes. At certain times of the year, the lakes contain a maximum amount of water, which has high concentrations of salt. The city has a beautiful mosque, which managed to remain intact, and a large market, which travellers go to in search of interesting souvenirs.
