Sightseeing in Maceio - what to see. Complete travel guide

The Brazilian city of Maceio is quite a calm and safe place that is why so many Brazilians choose it as their vacation destination. Tourists and people from the continent come here to enjoy trouble-free recreation at the ocean coast, lie on the beaches under coconut palm trees, and walk on picturesque waterfronts that offer heartwarming views of the ocean. Maceio itself is a large port, so it is not rare to see numerous colorfully painted boats of local fishermen. Just like other resorts, this city has its own peculiarity and attraction – naturally formed pools that appear at the coast during the low tide.
The area of the Brazilian megalopolis was discovered by European naval explorers in 1609. Having stepped on this land, Europeans quickly noticed that this region is perfectly suitable for agriculture. The first settlement on the site of modern Maceio appeared soon after the discovery. Slowly, immigrants from different European countries started settling in Brazil. They were exploring wild areas, building new fazendas, and making plantations.
Year after year, the settlement was developing and expanding. The population of Maceio was increasing as well. Cultivating sugarcane became very popular in the region, and so big sugarcane plantations appeared near Maceio. Fruit tree gardens were also popular. In 1815, on December 5, to be precise, Maceio officially became a town. Just twenty-four years after that event, Maceio became the capital of Alagoas State. Copyright www.orangesmile.com
Avenida Beach is the most popular public beach in Maceio. Both locals and guests of this city enjoy relaxing here. There are many hotels of different segments along Avenida. The beach is mostly covered with sand but there are areas with the pebble surface. That is why it is better to have your shoes on if you decide to take a stroll. The ocean water has the highest temperature in the period from December to May. Its temperature can reach 32°C during these months. That being said, the water temperature is between 27°C and 30°C in the remaining months.
Groups of young tourists and families with children find it comfortable to relax in Avenida. The coastal water is shallow and the bottom is free of sharp objects, so parents can let their kids swim and play in the ocean safely. There is a rental office with sun umbrellas and loungers. Do you want to make a journey to the past? Consider visiting the Alagoinhas Ruins in this case. These are the remains of an old Catholic church built at the beginning of the 19th century. The building looks incredibly picturesque and picture-perfect, so no wonder why there are usually tourists who come to explore the ruins.
Naturally, Maceio is primarily a beach destination, so its excellent beaches remain the main attraction of this place. Sobral Beach or Praia do Sobral is an incredibly popular coastal area. Water is always calm and warm here. However, the bottom is unpredictable as there can be shallow areas and deep areas, so parents are better to keep an eye on their small kids and don’t leave them unattended. Families with older children can relax here safely. Simply explore the coastal water beforehand and tell kids if there are any deep areas nearby.
Are you fond of beach activities? There is a special playground where everyone is welcome to play badminton and volleyball. Small children may also find it interesting to visit a special area where they can learn to make sand figures. If you decide to make a picnic near the ocean coast, Sobral Beach has a special area with numerous tables for cooking food. Fans of surfing and scuba diving can rent the equipment they need. Beginners will be glad to know that there are professional coaches who are always ready to teach vacationers how to surf or dive.
Guaxuma Beach is one more family-friendly place in Maceio. You will not find any bays, rocks or reefs near this beach. Guaxuma is about tranquility and calmness. The beach has vegetation, and the coastal water is shallow. On a hot day, it is particularly pleasant to sit under the shade of beautiful trees that grow on Guaxuma. The ocean is always calm here, and the bottom doesn’t have unpleasant surprises like sharp stones. A special bordered swimming area for children makes it very comfortable for parents to keep an eye on their kids.
Unfortunately, not many countries in the world have a direct air connection to Maceio. When flying to Brazil, many tourists prefer to make a change at a large European airport, for example, in London or Zurich. Maceio has an international airport that serves flights from different European countries. It is also possible to fly to a large Brazilian city such as Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paolo first. After that, take a domestic flight to the resort peninsula.
