Despite the fact that aqueducts are primarily associated with the Roman Empire, the Acquedotto del Nottolini located in Lucca doesn't belong to the ancient Roman era, although historians do not exclude the fact that there was an underground aqueduct in the city in ancient times. The Aqueduct of Nottolini was built in 1833 according to the design of the royal architect Lorenzo Notollini and by order of Maria Luisa, Duchess of Lucca.
