Royal Liver Building, Liverpool

» At the beginning of the last century, the London company decided to enlarge the space for 6 thousand workers. 
Facts:» The construction lasted three years. The opening ceremony took place in 1911. It was visited by a famous politician and nobleman Edward Stanley.
» In 60 years, the building was restored completely and its offices were equipped with modern appliances.
» When the 100th anniversary of the building was celebrated, the 3D laser show was held.
» It is the first skyscraper built of reinforced concrete and steel in the world.
» The royal building is 98 m high. It is 92 m long and 54 m wide. 13 floors are serviced by 12 lifts.
» The Royal Liver Group paid £800 000 for the construction of the skyscraper. The building is located near the Mercey River.
» The skyscraper is distinguished by two 5.5-meter birds. They are installed on clock towers. Eagles are chained and attached to the tower dome. Big birds look at opposite sides. According to the legend, the city will cease to exist if the birds free from the chains and fly away.
» The clock on the tower has a diameter of 7.6 m. It is the biggest in the country.
Liverpool Cathedral, Liverpool

» The Cathedral Church of Christ in Liverpool is the 5th biggest church in the world. Facts:» There had been disputes on the location of the House of God for 20 years. 100 famous architects of that time participated in the contest.
» Preference was given to the project of the 20-year-old Gilbert Scott. He had just been studying and designed no buildings. He had also been a Catholic.
» The cathedral looks like a tower. There are symmetric constructions in the corners. There are over 50 sculptures.
» The temple differs from other churches with a lot of mosaic stained glass windows. They depict Biblical scenes. The total area of the windows is 1 700 m2.
» The red sandstone rocks were laid in the foundation. The exterior impresses with its monumentality. There are almost no excessive decorative elements. The rooms are distinguished by space and light.
» In 1904, King Edward Vii laid the first stone in the building foundation. The construction lasted 70 years and was completed in 1978.
» The cathedral is 189 m long. It is 101 m high. Its total area is 9 687 m2.
» The Great George bell weighs 31 tons. There are no such bells in the world. The church organ is also the biggest in the country.
Church of Our Lady and St. Nicholas, Liverpool

» There is a gilded wing boat on the spire of the church tower. This is the symbol of the city patronized by the God-pleaser who watches over sailors and travelers. Facts:» Originally, the church was named after the Virgin Mary (1257). It was rebuilt when the number of parishioners had risen. Then, the name of St. Nicholas was added to the name of the building.
» The church is located in the city center. Long windows give so much light that electric lights are switched on only at night. Stained glass windows depict the Mother of God and St. Nicholas.
» The inner walls are decorated with massive wood panels. On them, you can see patterns of bunches of grapes. These symbols are related to the words of the Son of God “I am the vine, you are the branches”.
» Organ concerts that go hand in hand with other events are held in the church.
» The stone fence surrounds the construction. Here, you can also see a fountain, from which you can even draw water.
» The memorial Simpson Fountain pointed by the engraved plate is dedicated to William Simpson. He helped people in need and never refused to help. Traffic was blocked on the day of his funeral because too many people came to accompany him on his last journey.
World Museum, Liverpool

» The building had been called “The William Brown Library and Museum” until 1851. Count Derby was collecting natural historical exhibits. The halls did not accommodate too many visitors. So, the bigger building was built at the expanse of Sir William and with the support of parliamentarians. Facts:» The cultural institution was reconstructed only in 2005.
» At the top of the 5-storey building, there is the sector dedicated to space. Here, you can see space equipment and moon rocks. The separate exhibition presents different clocks.
» At the 4th level, you can see life-size prehistoric animals. The zoological collection consists of 1.2 million exhibits.
» The 3rd level is dedicated to the culture of different countries. 50 thousand artifacts will tell you about their traditions, life and religion. One of the niches displays artifacts from Ancient Egypt, such as tombs and precious accessories.
» The 2nd level presents natural historical exhibits. There are 20 000 items: tusks of mammoths, bones of extinct mammal species, and natural fossils. There is also the “house” of insects. Here, you can see dissected invertebrates.
» There is an aquarium at the lower level.
Church of St. Luke, Liverpool

» St. Luke Church is buried in lush thickets of the city garden. The sharp top with a spire of the House of God rises over nearby houses and is seen from afar. Facts:» The history of St. Luke Church goes back to several centuries. However, the exact date of the construction of the church is not known.
» The building gained its present form in 1971. The entire construction is faced with gray cut stone produced in the local sand quarry. The bright red tiled roof contrasts with other exterior elements.
» The outer walls of the cult building are decorated with moldings. Every picture depicts a particular Biblical scene.
» Stained glass windows have the form of arches. One of the windows depicts the unknown Liver bird. The frames are decorated with curls.
» The strict design made a sharp contrast with decorative leaves, which confirms the date of the construction (between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, 1811).
» There is a crypt in the subsoil of the church.
» The bells and the clock on the bell tower were damaged during the bombing in 1941.
» The temple was named after evangelist St. Luke. He followed Christ’s precepts, became a healer and a preacher, and propagated Christ’s teachings.
