Honduras is a democratic constitutional republic in the Central America. The country borders with Nicaragua on south, with Salvador on south-west and with Guatemala on west. It is also washed by Caribbean Sea and waters of the Pacific Ocean. The population of the country estimates just 7.4 million of people. The ethnic composition is quite homogenous as almost 90% of total inhabitants estimate mongrel. The territory of Honduras is mainly a wide tableland that is crossed by two thousand meters long mountains from east to west. The climate of the country is tropical with slight fluctuations of temperature during a year. However, during some periods of the year there is a risk of disastrous tropical hurricanes. Because of this fact the best time to visit the Caribbean region is from February to April.
In terms of industrial development Honduras is behind many countries of America, however in terms of culture this place is well-known due to its rich traditions and ancient art got yet from Mayan tribes. You can find references to those ancient times in many buildings, houses, and sights of the colonial architecture represented in Renaissance and Baroque styles.
Honduras is very popular among fans of ecotourism; they visit the picturesque island Roatan. This islet is attractive for its marvelous nature and beaches with crystal clear water. At certain times of the year, you can observe how small sea bugs are born. There are many interesting excursions around the island, excellent conditions for diving, and also for watching dolphins. On the island there are several original settlements, a walk along which will be interesting for all fans of unusual excursions.
On this island is the elite resort Little French Key, which is popular among wealthy travelers. Here, among the picturesque exotic thickets, there is a classy hotel with a restaurant and bar, on the territory of which there is a private beach with white sand. For tourists, among the slender palm trees, traditional hammocks are stretched, and in the resort there is an interesting zoo. Gourmets here have an excellent restaurant and a bar located on the water.
The unique historical landmark of Honduras is the Lancetilla Botanical Garden. It was founded in 1926 with the support of the local railway company. This botanical garden occupies the second place in the world in terms of area. In addition to hundreds of rare plants and flowers, visitors can see charming birds; more than 350 species live in the garden. On the territory of the botanical garden there is a very interesting bamboo forest, and a huge orchard. On the territory of the garden flows the river Lancetilla, on the shore of which there are beaches available to tourists.
Fans of walks in historical places will be interested to visit the archaeological Park of Quirigua. On its territory you can see the preserved fragments of the buildings of the ancient city, which was founded in this area in the 2nd century AD and lasted until the 8th century. As in many other ancient Mayan cities, many unexplained artifacts were discovered here, including fragments of mysterious calendars, as well as sculptures whose true purpose remains a mystery. A few years ago, the mysterious archaeological park was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is well equipped. All the historical artifacts presented in the park are enclosed by special wooden annexes.
