The latter has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as findings of scientists prove. Off the coast of Santa Maria Bay there is an important archaeological site; according to scientists, that's an ancient burial. The most important historical symbol of the island is the St. Mary Tower built in the 17th century on the initiative of the Order of Knights of St. John.
The tower was an important element in the complex of fortifications and fortresses; along with neighboring islands it represented a major obstacle to many conquerors. Four Watch towers : Mgarr ix-Xini Tower , Xlendi Tower , Dwejra Tower and San Blas Tower have survived on the island.
