The history of Erfurt extends back over 1,500 years. The central area of the city is the most valuable treasure. The Statthalterei palace is an impressive Renaissance landmark. A lot of famous people visited it over time and lots of historical events happened there. Nowadays it's the residence of the President of Thuringia. Next to Domplatz there is the Petersberg Citadel. It's one of the very few fortifications survived until today in its original form.
