Charming Calabria is usually associated with sunny beaches, while fans of excursion tourism come here every year in search of new discoveries and experiences. Virtually any city would suit for exploring the culture and history of the region; one of the most visited places is the picturesque fishing town of Pizzo Calabro. There is a unique religious landmark there, the old Church of Piedigrotta built in the rocky terrain. The church is located in a cave; there is an excellent viewing platform next to it. The nearby town of Tropea is an ideal place for those who like to devote time to strolling. Scenic streets with old houses and squares are located everywhere; visitors don’t have to take a tour here to admire unique monuments of architecture. In 1905 Calabria was hit hard by an earthquake, so many historical monuments were destroyed. Tropea is the only city of the region that wasn’t affected by the disaster. Many important tourist attractions are located in Scilla; there is the beautiful Ruffo Castle. It was built in the 18th century, but this architectural monument has managed to survive virtually intact to the present day.
