Culture of Benalmádena. Places to visit - old town, temples, theaters, museums and palaces

In Benalmadena, you will find historic landmarks of different epochs. The town still has fragments of the medieval protective constructions. Gorgeous watchtowers Torre Muelle, Torre Bermeja , and Torre Quebrada are among the most spectacular sights of the region. These towers were built in the 15th century. For many years, they protected the coastline from invasions. After extensive archaeological excavations, scientists found out that first settlements in the territory of the modern town appeared yet during the prehistoric era. Archaeologists also found many unique artifacts on the site. Nowadays, visitors can see ruins of first settlements in several ancient caves - Los Botijos , El Toro , and Las Zorreras .

The region of Benalmádena Costa is famous for relatively “newer” antique monuments. During the period of the Roman Empire, a large city was located on the site of the modern town. Having admired the ruins of antique settlements and unique rock drawings, it’s important to pay attention to the historical landmarks of the later period. Benalmadena is one of the few towns in Spain where it’s possible to visit a real Buddhist temple. The opening of Enlightenment Stupa Temple took place not long ago, in 2003. For locals, this temple is a symbol of harmony and prosperity. The Stupa Temple has a very unusual location – on a high rocky cliff that offers a stunning panoramic view of the town and coast. The landmark is not a small one – the height of the Buddhist temple is 33 meters. The roof is decorated with a gilded umbrella, and when the weather is sunny, it’s possible to notice its shine from different parts of Benalmadena.
The gorgeous Castillo Monumento Colomares can easily win the title of the most eye-catching architecture landmark. This beautiful castle is dedicated to the great discoveries of Christopher Columbus. The project of the architectural complex is the result of work of Stephen Martin. When looking at Castillo Monumento Colomares, it’s hard to imagine that the fabulous castle was built in the end of the 20th century. Castillo Monumento looks very authentic because it is designed in line with traditions of the past centuries. Another fantastic place, Benalmadena Pueblo , is located just a few minutes away from the castle. The central square of the town is always crowded and has some interesting landmarks, such as the “Girl from Benalmadena” sculpture. Copyright www.orangesmile.com

The marvelous resort is also not deprived of gorgeous museums, such as Museo Precolombino that is open in the building of the local municipality. Its collection includes artworks and household items of Latin American Indians. First explorers of the continent brought these unique artifacts to Spain. Tourists also enjoy visiting Municipal Archaeological Museum that exhibits a large collection of ancient art masterpieces. A significant part of the items exhibited is a gift from famous Mexican artist Felipe Orlando to Benalmadena. There are many fans of this artist in Andalusia. Close to Benalmadena Pueblo, you will find several incredibly attractive historical streets, each of which still has old buildings in the national style. These charming streets are an ideal destination for an unhurried walk. Moreover, there are many workshops, stores, hotels, and restaurants open in these eye-catching buildings.
