Civil War Museum, Atlanta

» The Atlanta Cyclorama and Civil War Museum has preserved historical information about the Army North’s attack on the city in 1864. The terrible fire, people’s grief, and the city defenders’ sturdy resistance are shown in paintings, photographs, and artifacts of the Civil War. 
Facts:» Margaret Mitchell described these events in her novel Gone with the Wind. The writer herself was a resident of the city. Her house still exists today.
» In the museum, visitors can see a rotating cylindrical panoramic painting measuring 120 m x 14 m. It was John Logan, one of the eyewitnesses, who came up with the idea. And in 1886, it was realized by German artists and architects.
» In 1936, a diorama of war events appeared in the museum. Today, short films about the Civil War are shown at the cinema.
Bank of America Plaza, Atlanta

» After a design was developed, it took 14 months for it to be implemented, and that’s how Bank of America Plaza, the tallest building in the city, was erected in Atlanta. It is the property of the National Bank. Facts:» Architects chose to use postmodernism denying simple and strict lines. The skyscraper was placed in the center of the city in the early 90s.
» The building is 312 meters high. It has 55 floors. 24 elevators circulate between them.
» Vertical lines of the side elevation emphasize its up direction. The offices inside are located so that they occupy the corner spaces as well.
» The part of the building where business offices are found ends with a flat 284-square-meter roof. The 27-meter spire mounted on the roof is a copy of the building configuration. It is covered with 23 ct gold trellised sheet.
» Glasses are made using the technology that allows keeping heat inside and save on heating.
» In everyday speech, locals call the bank ‘pencil’ – because it resembles one – or ‘cigarette’ because of its luminous spire.
» In addition to business offices, there is a conference hall, a sports and fitness center inside. The building cost the owners $436 million.
One Atlantic Center, Atlanta

» One Atlantic Center is the third-tallest skyscraper in Atlanta. It is approximately 250 meters tall. It is known as IBM Tower. Facts:» It is mainly occupied by offices found on 50 floors. Famous architects worked on the design of One Atlantic Center. The construction was completed in 1987.
» IBM has a head office here. The building had been called the highest skyscraper in Atlanta for five years. In 1992, Bank of America Plaza pushed One Atlantic Center to the second place.
» The exterior of the building is finished with pink Spanish granite. The top of the peak is made up of copper plates with small gold inserts.
» The construction is Gothic in style. When it’s dark, the tower and its corner facades are brightly illuminated which makes it look like a flaming torch.
» In the early 2000s, a smaller skyscraper appears across the street. Postmodern elements could be traced in its design.
» Now the group of city buildings is at the second stage of the capital center development. The next stage is under development. At the moment, there are not enough candidates for office rental.
Atlanta History Center, Atlanta

» The Atlanta History Center is an area of about 20 hectares, which houses historic sites and museum pavilions related to the history of the city. Facts:» To discover what life of local people used to be like, you need to visit the Swan House, where the Inman family lived. The owner built the villa in 1928. It is a luxurious house surrounded by a park with fountains and flower beds.
» A few parts of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire were filmed there. Today, this small palace often hosts wedding ceremonies.
» You can see the life of ordinary citizens by visiting the Tullie Smith House. The farm with all the buildings was moved here in 1969 so as to preserve it as a historical monument.
» The pavilions have an exhibition dedicated to the 1996 Olympic Games, and there are many exclusive items on display: a full set of medals, athletes' sneakers, souvenirs, and the podium.
» After the Civil War, the Ku Klux Klan movement arose in southern states. A special exhibition tells visitors about this period of the state’s history.
Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta
Facts: » The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) holds concerts at Atlanta Symphony Hall located on 14th Street. The Woodruff Arts Center hosts international concerts.
» Three-level seats are designed for almost 2,000 people. The music hall has parterre, lower and upper balconies. In addition, there are wheelchair spaces with 12 additional seats. The hearing-impaired can use wireless audio.
» The interior of the hall has no frills. The plush seats have footrests.
» The Atlanta Orchestra performed the first work – written by Robert Shaw – in 1975. The musicians perform many academic works by world-famous composers.
» Critics noted that the sound of music was getting worse due to the hall acoustics. Over $20 million was raised through a crowdfunding campaign in support of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and thanks to the Delta Air Lines fund.
» The hall had been closed for restoration for 11 months. Financial investments helped restore the former line-up of the orchestra (there were 88 musicians).
Rhodes Hall, Atlanta
Facts: » Rhodes Hall is the private home of Amos Giles Rhodes, a wealthy businessman. Rhodes dreamed of building a residence that would boggle his contemporaries’ minds.
» He invited architect W. Denny, who was able to build a unique villa in 1904. The architect used medieval motifs and Victorian design features in the design of the residence.
» The interior was filled with mahogany furniture, colorful stained-glass windows, frescoes, patterned parquet floors. The house was fully electrified and had a security system.
» When the villa owners passed away, their children bequeathed it to the city for historical use. The building had been used for storing archives for many decades.
» In 1983, Rhodes Hall was restored and included in the list of historical monuments. Nowadays, it is rented for weddings, birthdays, and special occasions.
