In ancient times the island was called Pityoussa which means «covered with the pine trees». There are still many wonderful pines, but the island is called Spetses which means «fragrant island» in Italian. The Venetians, who came here, admired the smell of thyme, rosemary, fragrant herbs and sweet-smelling flowering shrubs. Nowadays the rich flora still covers the territory of Spetses. The island is ideal for walking because nature here is almost not affected by tourists. You can find different walking routes on Spetses because there are almost no cars. However, you can easily rent a bike. It will help you to reach different parts of the island. The rent is not expensive and a bike is good training equipment. Moreover, you can take a taxi or use public transport. In case you want to feel the spirit of adventure and get unforgettable experience, use the services of the horse carriage. Be sure to walk along the streets of Spetses settlements. The sidewalks are covered with mosaics made of small coloured stones which looks like a scattering of caramels. «Armata» festival is an important event on Spetses. It is held every September and it is dedicated to the battle in the strait between Spetses Island and Kosta during the revolution of 1822.
