In the surroundings of Feodosia, there are several beautiful medieval fortresses. The most famous of them is the Genoese Fortress Kafa. It was built in the 14th century. Originally, the fortress was a big architectural complex. It included several large palaces, administrative buildings, a bishop’s residence, and different outbuildings. By the 19th century, the fortress had lost its original strategic status and been almost destroyed. Only several medieval towers, some walls, old churches, and the bathhouse have survived to this day. Some of the medieval defensive constructions are located right on the territory of the city. One of them is the Tower of St. Constantine. It was built in 1382 to protect the coastal zone from conquerors. In the late 15th century, the tower was conquered by Ottoman conquerors and partially rebuilt. The historical value of the construction was recognized at the beginning of the 20th century. It was reconstructed completely at that time. Another beautiful architectural monument is Cottage Stamboli. It was built for the local wealthy merchant in 1914. As many other luxurious constructions, the cottage was nationalized after the Revolution of 1917. Then, it served as a sanatorium. In wartime, the hospital that had been open for many years was founded here. In the middle of the 20th century, the historic building served as a restaurant.
