The historical part of Siena is also a world heritage site. This area has saved its Medieval aura. Piazza del Campo is a place where most of the excursions begin because around the square you can find a lot of interesting architectural buildings. A wonderful Palazzo Pubblico, a part of saved historical works – the Mangia Tower.
The main decoration of the old square is the Fonte Gaia. The fountain had the present decorative frame constructed by Jacopo della Quercia, a famous sculptor. The fountain was built at the beginning of the 15th century. Its original sculptures were placed to the Siena’s museum and the fountain is decorated with the replica. One of the most outstanding monuments of Siena is the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta. This luxurious Gothic cathedral has been building form 1215 until 1263.
