Bonifacio, France
From series “Amazing Cities on the Rocks”
The Corsican town of Bonifacio also became famous in many ways due to its unusual location. It is built on top of a cliff right at the coastline. Town buildings hang over the coast at an altitude of 70 meters. The cliff has been washed away by the ocean for many years. Nature also worked hard to form the amazing appearance of Bonifacio. The exact date of the founding of this French town is unknown. According to some sources, it was founded by the count of Tuscany Boniface II in the early 9th century.
Archaeological research has shown that the very first settlements were founded on this site more than 6.5 thousand years ago. A major trading city was located here in ancient times. The limestone rock of the Grain de Sable is one of the main attractions of the town. It juts into the sea for several meters. It looks very impressive surrounded by dense green vegetation. One of the most mysterious sights is located nearby. This is the Staircase of the King of Aragon. It has 187 steps. According to legend, this staircase was carved into the rock overnight.
