From series “Top 15 Unesco Sites in Russia”Year: 18th-19th century.
In the Republic of Karelia, not far from Petrozavodsk, there is an amazing architectural ensemble of Kizhi, which is also known as the Kizhi Pogost. There is an architectural complex on the homonymous island of Lake Onega. It includes two churches and a bell tower, which were built in the 18th and 19th centuries. The ancient buildings, which can now be seen on the island, were made of tree, they differ in amazing design accuracy and proportionality. It is also worth noting that the complex of buildings in an amazing way is in harmony with the surrounding landscapes.
Nowadays, Kizhi is a unique open-air museum, the territory of which was significantly expanded in 1966. Part of the preserved in Karelia wooden chapels has been transported to the island, as well as outbuildings and houses of local residents. The most outstanding and recognizable structure of the ensemble is the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord, which was laid on the island back in 1714.
