The Jesuit Block and Estancias of Cordoba, Argentina
From series “Famous Unesco Sites in South America”Year: 17th century.
Those who love to explore the historical sights will like walking around the Jesuit Block, which is located in the immediate vicinity of Cordoba. The quarter is a complex of survived buildings constructed by Jesuit missionaries. The building of the National University that is one of the oldest in South America has preserved there too. In addition, here you can see a building of an old school, a few surviving houses and an old church.
The main part of the historical buildings that can be seen today, was built in the first half of the 17th century. The quarter went completely deserted in 1767, when Charles III signed a decree on the expulsion of the Jesuits. All constructions of the area came under the jurisdiction of the state; only a few of them managed to survive to the present day. A huge number of travelers visit the Jesuit quarter within a sightseeing tour. Besides religious and residential premises, tourists can visit an old print shop, as well as see some surviving town farms.
