Antwerp City Hall, Belgium

The Antwerp City Hall is a great example of Holland Renaissance. This magnificent city hall has been built for four years and was finished only in 1565. Notwithstanding the city hall’s age, the building has saved many original elements. As many years ago, the hall’s façade is decorated with medieval heraldic symbols. Not so far next to them has appeared bright flags of Antwerp margraves and Spanish dukes.

A famous Belgium architect Cornelis Floris De Vriendt has projected the Antwerp City Hall. Apart from classical marks of the Renaissance epoch, the building has the unique elements of Flemish Gothic. Together they make the four stored building look marvellous. The historical building height is 76 meters. It is placed in the main city square where are held social and holiday events.

One of the main building decoration is the central sculpture of the Holy Mother. Near has placed other interesting compositions based on Bible history. The last huge reconstruction of the city hall was at the end of the 19th century. Practically all original elements were saved. The inner decoration of the hall was also saved. Today the main decoration of halls is the frescos. The walls and ceilings are covered with illustrations of the main historical events. Some halls have portraits of outstanding Belgium kings.
