Pingyao, China

Pingyao, the ancient Chinese city, is also under UNESCO protection. A great number of historical monuments have been placed there. The first city was settled there in the 9th century. Pingyao became flourish during the reign of the Ming dynasty in the 14th century. The main property of the ancient town is the unique architectural city image. Pingyao is the only city in the country that has saved completely the whole complex of the Medieval strengthening structures. There are about 100 under the State’s Protection landmarks. There also included museums and samples of architecture.

The city is surrounded by the 6 thousand meters long inaccessible wall. Its high is about 10 meters and width ranges from 3 to 5 meters. The wall was built hundred years ago without any special equipment. That’s why its dimension strikes everyone. There have also saved 72 watchtowers and about 3 000 orifices, that were used for defensive firing function.

In the center of the city you can see the Market Tower. This is the start point of all excursions. Near the tower have placed the picturesque streets, where you can walk on a hot day and have a great time. A lot of old houses with square inner courtyards are made in traditional style. Some courtyards are free for walks. Antique temples were also saved. One of the most beautiful temples is the Qīngxū Guān. Today there has placed an interesting museum. Next - Baku
