The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is an example of the postmodern style. It is located in Los Angeles. It was built in 2002. It has been the main Catholic cathedral in the city since its opening. The St. Vibiana's Cathedral was located on its site earlier. Its building was destroyed in the 1994 earthquake. Spanish architect Rafael Moneo was the author of the project of the new cathedral. The architecture of the building is remarkable in that it has no sharp corners. The cathedral is distinguished by its impressive size. Its height is about 30 meters. The length of the building is 101 meters.
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels has been a multifunctional religious center since its foundation. The mausoleum is located in it. Several special niches for burials and crypts are also equipped here. The tomb of the famous actor Gregory Peck is located in the cathedral. The new cathedral in the postmodern style is usually considered as a single complex with the chapel of St. Vibiana. It is located nearby. The tomb of St. Vibiana is preserved on its territory.
Elegant chandeliers illuminate the spacious hall. They are also made of bronze. The 18-meter-high organ was constructed in the cathedral. The design of the windows deserves special attention. Beautiful stained glass windows are installed in some of them. They were miraculously preserved from the previous cathedral. They are of great artistic value today. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is the subject of heated debates in the circles of modern architects throughout the entire period of its existence. Many consider its architectural appearance too illogical and defiant.
