Ascension Military Cathedral, Russia

In Novocherkassk you can see the Ascension Military Cathedral where the remains of great Don headmen are placed. The first cathedral was built there 6 years after the city foundation. What we see today belongs to the beginning of the 20th century. It is a wonderful 75 meters tall architectural monument in Neo-Byzantine style.

At once there can be up to 5 000 believers. Originally during the restoration were used valuable material and cupolas were covered with leaf-gold. However, at the post-revolutionary period and after the Second World War this cathedral has lost its values. In 2005 the first restoration of the cathedral has begun. It has lasted for 4 years. The cathedral was opened up to the 200 years of Novocherkassk.

One of the main innovations is the unique cathedral art lightning. In the evening its façade assembles iconographic scenes. Until now the church is still decorated. In 2010 its cupola was covered with golden leaves and the cross was decorated with a huge rock crystal. Inside the cathedral is decorated very nice. The walls have a lot of wonderful icons, one of them are old icons of the Holy Mother. One of the main religious artefacts of the cathedral is the reliquary of Saint John.
