From series “Ancient Amphitheaters and Arenas, That Are Still Operational”

Turkey is famous for a variety of beautiful ancient amphitheatres. Nowadays, however, only a few of them are used today for cultural events. One of these amazing ancient theaters is located in the city of Aspendos. Together with the preserved aqueduct, the amphitheater is the main historical attraction of the ancient city. Many beautiful legends are associated with these constructions. According to one of them, two talented architects dreamed of marrying the emperor’s daughter, who was famous for her spiritual beauty.

Aspendos Amphitheatre, Turkey The Emperor promised to give his daughter in marriage to the one who would build the most necessary building for the city. Thirty years it took one architect to build an aqueduct, and exactly the same to the second to build a wonderful amphitheater. The king was so impressed with their work that he could not choose his future son-in-law, and promised to do justice. He decided to cut the daughter in half. Then the architect Zenon, who built the amphitheater, decided to abandon his "half" and saved the life of the aged 30-year-old beauty. With that he immortalized his name in history.

The amphitheater built by Zenon was incredibly beautiful and was decorated with numerous fine statues and sculptures. Unfortunately, they haven’t survived to our days. Spectator seats have been carefully restored. Today, ballet and opera performances take place in the theater frequently. This is where the most famous artists in the world appear. Jose Carreras, as well as other famous opera singers, visited the ancient theater several times. The amphitheater of Aspendos, which can hold up to 7000 people, is one of the largest in the world.
