Researchers have found out that once the Cenote Ik Kil was a cave, whose vaults collapsed. The incredibly attractive well with fresh water was formed as a result of the collapse. These days, high walls are covered with exotic plants.
The cenote is quite old. It was a valuable source of fresh water for the Mayan people. They believed that the deep well served as an entrance to the underworld.
